Obligatory Jake Peavy Update
By: mbohn
It is looking more and more like Jake Peavy will be traded to the Braves at any moment. According to MLB.com, the
Braves feel good about their offer for Peavy, but are getting increasingly frustrated
with the Padres and GM Kevin Towers. When it is all said and done, it looks like Atlanta will be sending SS
Yunel Escobar
, OF
G
orkys Hernandez
or OF
J
ordan Schafer
, and either SP
Charlie Morton
or SP
JoJo Reyes
. My thoughts after the jump.
If the Braves can unload JoJo Reyes and Jordan Schafer they should do it. Schafer had his stint on the Canseco List this summer, and did not light it up upon his return. Reyes’ ceiling is as a #3 starter, and that is if everything works out for him. I see him as more of a 4 with a little upside, but I do not expect him to ever be a solid #3.
Escobar is the one that hurts, as he is not arbitration eligible until after the 2010 season, plays solid defense, and is hitting .303 through 230 games in the Bigs. The good news is that he is a two hitter, and the Braves can punch Kelly Johnson into that slot with no problems. The bad news is that moving Escobar means bringing
Brent Lillibridge
in and making him the fulltime SS. While Lillibridge is supposedly money with the glove, and possibly better than Escobar defensively, his work with the lumber needs to improve dramatically.
The other move would be to bring in another SS either through trade or free agency. Former Bravos
Rafael Furcal
and
Edgar Renteria
are both potential free agent acquisitions.
