Downs Could Begin Year as Jays’ Closer
What does an 84mph fastball get you these days?  Well, it puts your job on the line if you are one B.J. Ryan.  Toronto’s manager Cito Gaston is watching Ryan closely, and if he does not improve vastly over the next week, you can bet your sweet ass that Scott Downs will start the year working the ninth for the Blue Jays.  Granted, Ryan is not a flame thrower to begin with, as last year he ended the season throwing his fastball around 89mph.  Don’t take my word for it, take Ryan’s:

“I’m not a huge velocity guy. Once I toned down my mechanics (early in his career) I was never a guy who threw 95. I’m a guy who pitched from deception and location.
“That’s what I’m more concerned about. The velocity thing is going to come. It’s going the right way now. (Yesterday) was a crummy result but from what I was looking to do, it’s better.”

If you have Ryan on your roster, handcuff him with Downs.  If you don’t have Ryan, grab Downs and try to screw the guy who does.
