By now we all know that the Tigers landed Johnny Damon to play left field for them. What we do not know is what this means for Damon's value in 2010 fantasy leagues. Dude flew under the radar, to a degree, in 2009 and put up a huge year. Under the radar, you ask? Well, I personally chastised a Phillies fan (and hardcore fantasy baseball player) in the WS for claiming that neither Damon nor Matsui were threats. We know how that played out now, do we not?
Back on topic, in 2009 Damon was arguably one of the top five left fielders in fantasy, as well as in actual baseball. People, myself included, tend to think Damon is older than he actually is, because he has been in the Majors for 15 seasons. If you are counting, he is 36 years old, and still swinging the lumber like he always has. Hell, dude matched his career high in homers at 24 last season and posted his highest OPS since the 2004 campaign. The only thing slowing down offensively is stolen bases, and for fantasy purposes we do not care that he is terrible with the leather at this point.
So where should we slot him for 2010? It is hard to say since I have yet to form my outfield tiers, but you can probably pencil Damon in for about a .285 AVG, 75 RBIs, 90 Runs, 12 SBs, 18 HRs, and an OPS of around .790. These numbers come from me looking at about 7 projection systems and adjusting with the Mike Bohn Gut Algorithm. These numbers may need to be adjusted depending on how the Tigers' lineup takes shape as well.
We will have full outfielder projections in the coming weeks, as well as every position, so stay tuned.
