Franklin Morales? Really? Manny Corpas? Wait?

Yeah, really. The Colorado Rockies will be without closer Huston Street
for at least the first month of the season, and manager Jim Tracy is
giving the ball to Franklin Morales in the meantime. With Manny Corpas
also in the bully, Morales will have to perform to keep the gig.
Last year Morales appeared in 40 games for the Rocks, garnering a 4.50
ERA and 1.53 WHIP. His K:BB sat at a 1.78, with his K/9 sitting at
9.23. So dude can get some strikeouts, but he is also a risky play for
your ERA and WHIP. That being said, dude is only 23 years of age, and
could pull it together and make a splash. Color me skeptical on this
one, as he has always been a starter until last season after coming off
of a right shoulder injury. He throws with his left, however, so do not
be too perturbed by that.
Corpas did not fair too much better last season. Okay, he sucked on
toast last year, to be frank. Frank? Drebin? Sorry, got distracted.
Corpas had an ERA of 5.88 to go with his awesome 1.51 WHIP. His K:BB
was 3.43, markedly better than Morales', but his K/9 was a mere 6.42.
This is where I have to point out the lunacy of these stats for these
two guys. Morales only pitched 40 frames of work, while Corpas logged
33.2 innings. Corpas struck out only 24 batters, but also only walked
seven opponents. Compare that with Morales, who sat down 41 batters,
but walked 23 of them.
In the end, Morales is the guy to own for now. If you want to play
closer roulette and hope you get a blank. The risk here is getting
blown up a few times and seeing him lose the job to Corpas. So go
ahead, grab them both, and then when Morales loses the ball you can slot
Corpas in and do even more damage to your pitching categories. In
other words, I will be avoiding this bully like it is the H1N1 virus.
Proceed with caution, or do like me and just proceed to another bully.
